Via The Muskegon Chronicle: From Local Reports.
A 23-year-old Twin Lake man who was a second-year medical student at Michigan State University was killed early Thursday when the vehicle he was driving left the road and hit a tree.
Michael John Lundholm of 4779 Cady was home for the weekend to celebrate the holiday and participate in a friend’s wedding, according to his family. The accident occurred at 2:43 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of M-120 and Roberts Road in Muskegon Township.
Lundholm was a 2001 graduate of Reeths-Puffer High School. He was the son of Diane Sluis and John Lundholm.
No details of the mishap were available this morning. The investigation is being conducted by the Muskegon Township Police Department, but no one with the department could be reached today.
Michael’s stepmother Nancy Lund holm said he was in town for a wedding where he was to be the best man. Michael’s father is replacing him in the wedding.
“He had so many friends I couldn’t even count them all,” said John Lundholm, Michael’s father. “He had over 400 numbers in his cell phone.”
John Lundholm said his son was “very outgoing” and always had a smile on his face. “It was cute smile, everybody loved it.”
He described his son as an excellent golfer and said it was golf that brought them together. “It was the one thing we had in common,” he said.
Michael Lundholm was a four-year varsity starter on the Reeths-Puffer golf team and captain his senior year. His father said he had a “four or five handicap.” The two played in the father-son tournament on a regular basis at Muskegon’s Lincoln Golf Course.
Leading an active life didn’t sway Michael from his studies. John Lundholm said his son graduated eighth in his class at Reeths-Puffer and was “in the top of his class this year in the second year of med school.”
Nancy Lundholm said Michael had a zest for life and was always on the move.
“There’s nothing in his life he would have changed,” she said.
Nancy Lundholm said Michael had recently been to Las Vegas and went white-water rafting this summer.
Reeths-Puffer High School Principal Dan Beckeman said he received a call about Lundholm’s death on Thursday. Lundholm and several friends had returned to Muskegon for a classmate’s wedding this weekend, Beckeman said.
“He was a bright student — very goal-oriented,” Beckeman said. “He was very respectful and well-liked. It’s a very sad deal.”
Arrangements are being handled by Sytsema Funeral Homes.
