The quest to honor Michael Lundholm’s memory with a scholarship fund got off to a financially beneficial and emotional start Saturday at Lincoln Golf Club.
A fundraising golf event drew 119 family members and friends, including some from as far away as California and Nevada, in honor of Michael Lundholm, who died last Thanksgiving from injuries sustained in a car accident in Muskegon Township.
At the time of his death, Michael Lundholm was in his second year as a medical student at Michigan State University and was home to celebrate the holiday and participate in a friend’s wedding. He was the son of Diane Sluis and John Lundholm, both of Twin Lake.
Michael Lundholm graduated from Reeths-Puffer High School in 2001. He was a four-year player on the golf team and was a member of Lincoln Golf Club.
The memorial scholarship will be awarded to a Reeths-Puffer graduate who wants to attend Michigan State.
John Lundholm said the golf event raised $10,000, based on donations, entry fees, hole sponsors and raffles. Another $10,000 is needed to set up the fund through the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. John Lundholm said the golf event will be held annually on the weekend before Memorial Day at Lincoln Golf Club to support the fund.
The field of golfers included 13 students from Michigan State’s medical school, other MSU students and classmates from Reeths-Puffer.
“It turned out as good or better than I could have hoped for,” John Lundholm said.
The date of the golf event, May 19, would have been Michael Lundholm’s 24th birthday. In his memory, 24 green and white balloons — school colors for Reeths-Puffer and Michigan State — were released at the event.
